5 Best Road Trip Apps
Roadtrippers –
The Roadtrippers App helps you find all the things you will need along your route on a road trip. Find food, things to do, shops, points of interest, hotels, and gas stations.
You can put in your road trip start and end location and it will let you find everything along that route.
Use this as a road trip planner before you go or use it while you are driving to figure out where to go. (click here for the app)
GasBuddy –
The Gas Buddy App is a great tool to save you money. Use this app to find the cheapest gas near you. No more filling up the gas tank and then driving by a cheaper station a block away. That drives me nuts!
With this app, you can search for gas stations near you or search by zip code. View the results on a map view or a list view, both of which will display the name of the station and prices.
Another great feature is you can filter the results based on location, price, and amenities such as restrooms or restaurants.
It even predicts gas prices for the next day to let you know the best time to fill up. I have found this app to be really helpful both on road trips and in my own town. (click here)
iExit –
The iExit App lets you know what is at each of the upcoming exits along your interstate route, such as restaurants, gas stations, and hotels.
This is the best travel planning app as you just enter your road trip route and scroll through and click an exit to see what it has.
This is great if you have picky eaters, dietary restrictions, or just want to know which restaurants are at each location.
I find it really helpful, for example, when you want to look ahead and see where you can stop to eat in the next hour or so.
You have the choice of letting it find you on the highway, view nearby highways, select a highway, or search by location. This makes it a really flexible app when you’re driving.
You also can pick which direction you are going on the highway so it gives you the correct exit numbers and distance. This informative travel app will make your road trip so much easier. (click here)

Waze –
The Waze App is my all-time favorite travel app and the one that I use the most both at home and while traveling. It’s a navigational app that is the world’s largest community-based traffic and navigation app.
What does that mean? Your fellow travelers on the road help update accidents, road hazards, traffic jams, and approaching police so you always know what’s happening.
This allows Waze to figure out the quickest route to take, not just based on what is on a map, but also the current road conditions.
It’s continuously adjusting your route based on what is happening on the road ahead.
This means two things
1. If there is a traffic jam, it will reroute you beforehand and find the quickest route. Often times the route may take you off a highway onto side roads and I will question whether that is a good idea, but amazingly Waze is usually right.
2. Wondering why there is a traffic jam ahead and how far ahead?
Your fellow travelers on Waze have added in this information and will let you know if it’s traffic or some hazard on the road. I have to admit I just like knowing what is happening when traffic starts. (click here)
Hands down this is the most useful app on my phone to beat traffic in my own town and on a family road trip.
HotelTonight –
Often times on a road trip, we are not sure when we are going to stop for the night before we leave. You never know how the kids will do or what traffic jams you will run into on the road. So, we end up booking a hotel while we drive for that night.
Hotel Tonight App is perfect for finding last-minute hotel rooms along your route. Reputable hotel chains add their unsold rooms for the night at discounted rates. Which means you save money.
You can view the hotels available on a map to see what is coming up and then click on them to view details. Details include pictures, prices, hotel details, and amenities. So even though it’s last minute, you still get all the information you need about the hotel.
Then book the room right on your phone. I love this feature because who could hear on a phone call with a car full of kids.
Take it from me, we have used this app on our last two road trips and have had great success finding last minute hotels.
So, take the stress out of figuring out where to stay and try out this great app. (click here)
