There are several amenities at the Mirror Lake for visitors but they are pretty basic.

  • Grills
  • Concession Stand (by boat launch only)
  • Playground

Park Fees

Things to Do at Mirror Lake State Park

Beach

There is a cute little beach at Mirror Lake. The water is calm and perfect for younger kids and older kids to swim. We saw many people brought small floats to use in the water too.

Next to the beach area, you will find a beach volleyball court and a playground. There are bathroom facilities close to the beach but no showers. Parking is located right by the beach.

Pack any food or drinks you’ll need as there is no concession stand at the beach area. Dogs are not allowed at the beach.

There are no lifeguards at this beach so keep an eye on your kids.

Playground

There is a nice playground located right next to the beach and bathroom facilitates. When we were there it was closed for Covid-19 so check if it is open when you get there.

Boating and Kayaks

Visitors can rent from the Concession stand small pontoon boats, kayaks, canoes and stand up paddleboards. There is a boat launch to get the kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards into the water easily.

With the water being so calm it is easy for families to paddle around Mirror Lake.

Fishing

Fishing is a fun activity in Mirror Lake State Park. Fisherman can find Northern Pike, Stocked Walleye, Largemouth Bass, bluegill, and a variety of panfish. The weedy areas on the side of the lake are good for fishing but you can also take boats out into the lake to fish.

The lake averages about 10 – 19 feet deep other than the weedy edges of the lake. They also offer Ice fishing in the winter.

Hiking

There are 28.4 miles of hiking trails at Mirror Lake State Park. You can hike on 15 different trails ranging from easy to Moderate. They are not any really difficult trails in this park.

We hiked two trails while we were at the park Lakeshore Trail and Echo Rock Trail.

Lakeview Trail

Is an easy walk along the lake and through a wooded area. To get to the trail you will see signs north of the beach and parking lot to follow. It ends at the boat launch area.

The trail is made of wood chips so not great for strollers or wheelchairs. Although you could probably push a jogging stroller.

Make sure to look in the water as you walk we saw a beaver swimming in this area. Check out his head popping out of the water in the picture above.

Echo Rock Trail

This path is a mix of wood chips and paved areas to walk. The start and end of the trail is paved but the middle is woodchips. There is a parking lot and bathroom facilities near the entrance.

Echo Rock Trail is a great path if your kids like to climb rocks. There is a cool outcropping of rock formations you can walk around and climb. You will also find nice views of the water.

The path through the woods is pretty and a nice family hike. It ends at a large bridge overlooking the water. If you continue over the bridge you will take the Inshnala loop trail. If you don’t then the Echo loop trail will take you back to the parking lot.

This was our kids favorite trail they really loved climbing all the boulders and the walk through the woods.

Here is the Mirror Lake trail map link to get a better idea of all the hiking trails.

Camping

Mirror Lake State Park Camping and Campgrounds

There are several options for camping at Mirror Lake from May to October. You can pitch a tent or park your RV. They also have ADA compatiable cabins to rent.

Toilet and Shower facilities area also available seasonally.

Another great place to camp in the area is the KOA Wisconsin Dells. It’s only 15 minutes away and has great amenities and offers campsites, RV’s sites, and a variety of cabins.

We loved the KOA! It’s only one mile from Downtown Wisconsin Dells gives you easy access to all the best Wisconsin Dell’s attractions and beautiful state parks.

Devil’s Lake State Park

Located close by Mirror Lake is Devil’s Lake State Park. This park is larger and offers two beach areas, a nature center, and larger cliffs to hike. It also tends to be more crowded than Mirror Lake but it’s absolutely beautiful.

If you’re in the area I would suggest trying both parks. Families could easily do both in one day. Find out more in our review of Devil’s Lake State Park.

Your family is going to love hiking Mirror Lake State Park and exploring the many trails, swimming at the beach, boating, fishing, kayaking, and camping. The park really offers a lot of things to do and the smaller size park allows you to explore it all.

KOA Wisconsin Dells – Camping, RV & Cabins Review

We really enjoyed our family vacation at the KOA in Wisconsin Dells. Our family members stayed in both the RV sites and cabin sites. Which was helpful for our thorough review.

As we explored we found all of the campgrounds and facilities were kept clean and tidy. We also had great interactions with the staff and found them to be very friendly and ready to help with anything we needed.

Camping, RV & Cabin Lodging

There are three different ways to stay at the KOA Wisconsin Dells. Families can bring their RVs, rent a cabin, or bring their own tent to go camping. Here is a break down of each lodging type.

When you arrive check-in at the main office. Then you will follow a staff member who will take you to your site and answer any questions.

Wisconsin Dells Camping

Tent Site

There are two types of camping sites at this KOA Holiday Campground.

The first one has no electricity hookups or water. It offers a grass pad and a picnic table.

The upgraded campsite offers water and electricity. These are also on a grass pad with a picnic table and a fire ring.

Many of the campsites are surrounded by trees for shade. Campers can access a dishwashing station, clean showers, and bathrooms near the KOA office. Parking can also be found by each campsite.

RV Sites

This KOA has several different levels of RV sites. When picking a site you will need to decide if you want a pull-through site or if you are okay backing your RV into your spot.

The deluxe sites include a grill, patio and a nice table with four chairs. They include all your hook ups and a pull through location for you RV.

For the other sites, the big difference is the AMP rate and they just offer picnic tables rather than the nice patio furniture. But if your camping this may be all you need.

Cabins

The Cabins at KOA Wisconsin Dells offer several different levels of sizes and amenities. From a basic structure to full bathrooms.

The Deluxe Cabin we stayed in offered a full bath with tub, small refrigerator, air conditioning, bunk beds, and queen bed. Outside there was a picnic table and fire ring. Ours also had a small TV with cable.

It’s basically one big room but there are doors on the bathroom and bunk bed area. However, we found it got pretty hot in the bunk bed area with the door closed.

Deluxe Cabin with Full Kitchen – If you want to cook you might want this cabin. It also has a full bathroom and sleeps up to six or eight. These would be great for a bigger family.

In the Deluxe cabins, you will have linens included and soap in the bathroom. These Deluxe Cabins are great if you’re not ready to fully camp but want to enjoy a KOA or if you have family or friends staying on the site in tents or RVs.

Camping Cabin

Camping Cabins are more basic with no bathroom facility. These come in different sizes with some having two sets of bunk beds and others with just one set of bunk beds. You will also need to bring your own linens for these sites.

Campgrounds Map

I wouldn’t worry too much about your campsite location as everything is pretty close. If you have kids who want to play on the playground or pool maybe ask for a site closer to those locations, so you can watch from your camp, cabin, or RV site.

Take a look at the KOA campgrounds map to get a better idea of the size and where each type of lodging is located.

KOA Amenities

The Holiday KOA offers more amenities to guests then a regular KOA. They also offer special events like movie nights and family game nights. There is a calendar of events you can check ahead of time to see what’s going on.

Bathroom and Shower Facilities – Located right next to the main office you will find clean bathroom and shower facilities.

Pool – A big plus is the heated outdoor pool and splash area for families. This area is open only in the summer months.

Playground / Basketball / Game Room– Kids will enjoy playing outdoors at the playground, gaga court, sand area, and basketball court. It is not a huge playground but it gives the kids an area to run around. There is also a sand volleyball court for older kids. Or they can play soccer or games in the grass area.

On a rainy day or cold day head indoors to the small arcade in the main building.

KOA Store – At the KOA Store and office you can pick up small items and get the kids ice cream.

Laundry Facilities – Are also available next to the KOA Office.

Dishwashing Stations – This is great for families staying in tents to have a clean area to wash your dishes.

Tips for Your KOA Stay

  • This KOA books up fast in the summer and weekends so book in advance.
  • There is free WIFI throughout the campgrounds. However, it doesn’t always work great. So make sure to download some shows on your device before you arrive.
  • Quiet Hours – Are from 10 pm -8 am
  • You can not bring wood in from another state to use at the camp. Plan on purchasing wood at the KOA to use for the fire pit. You can buy wood a little bit cheaper just down the road from the KOA too.
  • There is a small area in front of the KOA for dogs to be off lease.

Devil’s Lake State Park is Wisconsin’s largest state park and one of the most visited State Parks in the Midwest. This stunning park boasts 500 ft. Quartzite Bluffs that overlook a sparkling 360-Acre Lake created during the Ice Age.

You’ll find tons of fun things to do in Devil’s Lake WI. Visitors can hike the bluffs & paths up to the famous Devil’s Doorway. Then take a swim at one of the two beautiful beaches. Enjoy a family picnic or exploring the small animals in the Nature Center.

Devil’s Lake WI – Best Hikes & Tips for Your Visit

Devil’s Lake Hours, Address & Directions

Hours

Devils Lake is open year-round from 6 am – 11 pm

Address & Directions

Devil’s Lake State Park is located in south-central Wisconsin and is only 3 miles from Baraboo & Wisconsin Dells. You will find brown and white signs pointing you to the State Park as you drive. Most routes will take you on I 90/94 and then exit to the local roads to arrive at Devil’s Lake.

The park gets very crowded in the summer months so I would suggest getting there early to grab a parking spot in one of the two lots.

Address for GPS: S5975 Park Rd, Baraboo, WI 53913

State Park Fees

All cars into the Wisconsin State Parks need to pay a vehicle sticker fee. Make sure to purchase your sticker when you arrive at the park and place it on your window before leaving your car.

A daily sticker ranges from $8 to $11. The fee is lower if you are a Wisconsin resident. If you plan to go more than once or explore other Wisconsin State Parks consider getting the yearly sticker. Find out more about the Sticker Fees here.

Park Map & Trail Map

Figure out where you are going before you arrive at the park with this Park Map and Trail Map. It helps guide us when we get to the park especially in the offseason when there are less staff to help you.

Devil’s Lake Hiking

Devil’s Lake boasts 29 miles of hiking trails made up of varying degrees of difficulty. Here are a few of our favorite hikes.

East Bluff Trail

Hiking in Devils Lake Sate Park

The East Bluff Trail starts at the North Shore Trailhead with an asphalt path that turns into stone steps. You will find several beautiful overlooks as you climb up to the top of the 500 ft Bluffs. If you do this whole trail it can take you up to 3.5 hours to hike. But you can turn around at any time or take different paths to shorten the distance.

If your looking for about an hour hike take the path to the first overlook to see Elephant Cave by Elephant Rock. It still has great views and a good workout but would be easier with kids.

Balanced Rock

To get to balanced rock you can continue on the East Bluff trail south or start at the South Shore for a shorter hike. To get to it from the South Shore park in the lot and take the paved sidewalk from the parking lot north. Then cross over the railroad tracks and follow signs to Balanced Rock.

This is a harder climb up steep stone stairs but it was doable for our kids’ ages 8 & 10. There are no handrails but you can take breaks on your hike up. Once at the top you will be on flat land. Visitors are rewarded with outstanding views of the lake and state park.

Devil’s Doorway

Devil's Doorway Hike in Devils Lake State Park

Devil’s Doorway is the iconic site of Devil’s Lake State Park. The massive stones have formed into what looks like a huge doorway with views of the lake.

To get to it follow the signs once at the top of the balanced rock trails. It will be a flat path for a while then you will head down a stone path to the Doorway. It’s pretty cool to see and if you make it all the way up to Balanced rock you might as well hike a little longer to this cool rock formation.

Tip: I would not do these hikes on rainy or snowy days as the rocks you need to climb will be slippery.

Tumble Rock Path

Tumble Rock Path Hike in Devils Lake WI

Looking for an easier path to take? The Tumble Rock Path is a paved 1.3-mile trail along the lake. It would take you about 2 hours round trip to hike it from north to south.

As you hike you can get great views of the lake and be up-close to the outcroppings of quartzite boulders. Have your kids search to see if they can find any “ripples” left in the boulders from when they were just sand at the bottom of a shallow sea.

Although the path is paved it is not always sooth and would be hard for wheelchairs and some strollers.

Hiking Tips: – Make your day of hiking easier with these simple Family Hiking Tips, Games, and Gear. Plus a free printable Hiking Checklist

Don’t forget to pack water bottles and snacks for your hike.

Below find some of our favorite hiking gear. I love the fanny pack to hold our water, phone, and snacks. No more back pain from carrying a big backpack full of water.

Devil’s Lake Beaches & Swimming

Beach area at Devils Lake State Park WI

Yes, you can swim and play in the sand at the beach while visiting Devil’s Lake. The two beach areas are located at the South Shore and North Shore visitor center areas.

Both locations have bathrooms and changing areas for swimmers. You can also rent kayaks and small boats to take out onto the lake. Make sure to bring your own chairs and sand toys.

Make your day at the beach less stressful with these 20 Hacks to Survive a Day at the Beach with Kids.

They do not have beach chairs to rent so make sure to bring your own chairs, beach blankets, sand toys, and sun umbrellas to enjoy the day. Here are a few of our favorite things to bring to the beach.

Concessions & Facilities at Devil’s Lake

There are three concession areas at Devil’s Lake. You’ll find them at the North & South Shore plus a Camp Store with food at the lower Ice Age Campground.

After labor day the South Shore concession is closed but offers food and ice cream in season. The historic North Shore Chateau is open all year and has both food and a store to shop. ‘

Another option is to bring your own food. Visitors will find grills and picnic tables on both the North and South Shore. There are also lots of places to throw down your blanket for a picnic along the lake with beautiful views too.

North Shore

The north end of the lake is referred to as the North Shore and has the most amenities, a beach area and a large parking lot. Here you’ll find the North Shore Chateau Restaurant, shop and ice cream with seating that overlooks the lake. Bathrooms and changing facilities can also be found here.

In summer months there are outside snack areas and seating close to the beach entrance. Plus Kayak and boat rentals.

South Shore

This area has a more open space feel to it overlooking the long beach area. Spread around the grass area you will find grills, benches and picnic tables. There is also a playground area for the kids.

In the summer months, you can also buy food, drinks & ice cream. Plus rent kayaks for the lake.

There are bathroom facilities, changing rooms and a large parking lot.

Tip: You can find hiking trails from both the North and South sides of the lakeshore.

Nature Center

Give the kids a break from hiking by visiting the Nature Center located near the North Shore entrance. This facility offers hands-on activities for the kids and teaches families about the history of the state park. Learn how the glaciers affected this area during the ice age.

Kids will enjoy looking at small animals like fish, turtles, and snakes. Downstairs kids will find a play area best suited to younger children. It’s also a great place to ask any questions you may have about Devil’s Lake.

The Nature Center is open 9am-4 pm daily from Memorial Day to Labor Day. From Labor Day to Columbus Day it is only open Thursday – Sunday. The rest of the year it may be open in the winter on weekends but you will have to check.

Camping at Devil’s Lake

Camping is extremely popular at Devil’s Lake. There are three campgrounds with a total of 423 family campsites. In season these sites book up quickly so I suggest reserving your site in advance. There are only 10 first come first serve reservation sites available.

If the campsites fill up there are a few local campsites located close by you might like. There is even one with a big lake filled with blow-up slides for the kids. Check here to get more campsite locations.

There is also a really nice KOA about 25 minutes away in the Dells. The KOA Wisconsin Dells is only 1 mile from downtown and is right in the middle of everything you’d want to see. They have campgrounds, RV sites, and cabins.

Mirror Lake State Park

Located only minutes from Devil’s Lake State Park is Mirror Lake State Park. It’s a smaller park but offers tons of fun family activities. Visitors will enjoy the pretty hikes, beach area, and camping.

What makes it different from Devil’s Lake is the pontoon boat rentals and boat launch area. There is also great fishing with a variety of fish to catch.

Where to Stay in the Area

The Devil’s Lake State Park is only minutes away from Wisconsin Dells and all the amazing resorts and hotels. The state park would make a great day trip from any of these resorts when you need a break from the waterparks.

30 Things To Do in Wisconsin Dell with Kids. Find out the best attractions to visit in winter and summer months. Tips on the best waterpark resorts to visit, downtown Dells and activities the whole family will love. Be ready for your Wisconsin Dells Vacation. #wisconsindells #winter #summer #wisconsindellsattractions #thingstodowisconsindells #kids

I have broken up this guide by season and Wisconsin Dells attractions. Use the menu above to skip to something that interests you or read the whole article and be fully prepared for your family vacation.

Things to Do in Wisconsin Dells in Winter

Most people think of Wisconsin Dells as a Summer getaway but there are tons of fun things to do in the Winter too.

Indoor Amusement Parks

Keep the kids busy indoors with Arcades, go-karts, miniature golf and more. On our visits, we have discovered three spots that we love to go to for indoor amusement.

Kalahari Resort

Kalahari’s Tom Foolery Amusement Park is 100,000 square feet of activities and games for the whole family. I love that they have things to do for all ages. For example, they have a ropes course for little kids and a huge one for older children.

You’ll also find a climbing wall, indoor mini-golf, laser tag, a huge arcade, Ferris Wheel, rides, and more. If you are staying at the hotel you get a discount on the tickets for this area but anyone can come not just hotel guests.

Wilderness Resort

The Wilderness Resort also offers tons of indoor attractions. The highlight for my kids was their really cool laser tag course. They also enjoyed the go-karts, sky ropes course, 3D mini golf, and escape rooms.

If you want a free area let the kids climb all over the four-story Timberland Playhouse. It has slides, tunnels, and bridges to spend hours exploring. Parents can find seats below to have a coffee and just let the kids play.

Knuckleheads Trampoline & Indoor Amusement Park

Knuckleheads is an indoor trampoline park, bowling alley, and arcade rolled into one huge 80,000 square foot building. Looking for more rides? They also have a roller coaster, bumper cars, ropes course, and 4D theater.

Knuckleheads have smaller rides and slides for younger children too. You can pretty much find something for everyone in the family at this cool indoor amusement park. If you plan to stay for a while look into getting one of their wristbands to help save you some money.

MagiQuest at Great Wolf Lodge

MagiQuest is located in a building next to Great Wolf Lodge so no need to stay at this hotel to play. Inside you’ll use your wand to go on quests solving riddles and eventually battling a dragon.

If your kids are Harry Potter fans this will be a huge hit. Kids and adults can spend hours in this indoor facility with mesh climbers, tunnels, and slides running around to conquer each level. We did this on a rainy day and it was a perfect break from the waterpark.

Worried about packing all that baby gear? Guess what you don’t have to with BabyQuip! This amazing baby rental company featured on Shark Tank will deliver everything to you.

Christmas Mountain Village

Christmas Mountain Village is a year-round family-friendly resort that offers tons for families to do. What I love are all the winter activities. Skiiers can ski down 16 different runs with a range from black diamond slopes to beginner runs. They also offer cross country skiing through their beautiful grounds.

If the kids aren’t into skiing yet try their snow tubing hill with handle tows to bring the tubes back up to the top of the hill. What parent wouldn’t love that? It’s a great way to spend a day with the kids outside but still, have the amenities of the resort such as restaurants and equipment rentals. You can also stay at this resort to be closer to all the action.

Cascade Mountain

Cascade Mountain is located 20-25 minutes from Wisconsin Dells. It is a larger ski facility offering 47 trails varying in difficulty levels. Cascade also offers ski and snowboarding lessons specifically designed to teach kids ages 4-10. I Skate at The Keg

Outdoor skating is offered year-round at The Keg restaurant in Downtown Wisconsin Dells. The outdoor rink uses synthetic ice that works even on the warmest days. Wisconsin Deer Park

If you have wildlife fans in your family head over to the Wisconsin Deer Park. Here you’ll be able to explore, feed and interact with over 100 Deer and other wildlife. Kids will love having the deer feed right out of their hands. Take photos and pet the animals in their own habitat.

Lost Canyon Tours

On the Lost Canyon Tour, families take a horse-drawn carriage ride through the Lost Canyon. It’s the longest and deepest canyon in Wisconsin. You’ll ride through a mile long of cliff walled gorges that few get to see. This is a great way to tour with younger kids or older adults. It’s a beautiful ride that will be narrated by your guide.

Big Foot Zipline

If you enjoy zip-lining you’ll love Big Foot Zipline. You’ll zip through the trees on this 2 1/2 hour tour on 7 different lines. It’s a pretty thrilling experience and perfect for more adventurous families.

This same company also runs a Duck Boat tour so you can create a package to save money and try out both adventures.

Tip: They also run the zip lines in the Winter. Just dress the kids warm.

Big Foot Rope Course

If your not quite ready for the ziplining adventure try the Big Foot Rope Course. It’s a huge outdoor ropes course that offers 80 different elements to climb, step, and crawl. Find tons of different bridges, helicopter crawl, pyramid, jungle tracks, bigfoot, giant steps, and more.

This too can be added into a package with the Big Foot Zip Line and Boat tours if you’re looking to do it all on your vacation.

Open from April 26- October 31st Country Bumpkin Farm offers the family a quintessential farm experience. Find freshly picked fruit and vegetables in their local store. Then head over to the Lil Bumpkin Play Village and Petting Farm. At the play village, you’ll find a farmhouse, church, log cabin, and school to explore.

For some adventure try out the zip line and obstacle course. Lastly, visit the petting zoo with sheep, goats, alpaca, ducks and a miniature dwarf horse. This is a great place to go in the Fall for their Halloween activities too!

Big Chief’s Go-Karts

What kid doesn’t love to race. At Big Chief’s Go Karts kids can race their parents on a safe track May through October. You’ll race up and down hills over a river and through curves. It’s exhilarating for the whole family.

Red Ridge Ranch

Just 20 minutes outside of Wisconsin Dells you’ll find Red Ridge Ranch a primer horse ranch. Visitors can take a guided horseback rides through their 250 Acres of rolling hills and forests. There are a variety of horses for both experienced riders and beginners.

Red Ridge also offers horse-drawn wagon rides in the summer and sleigh rides in the winter. For the youngest in your group, they offer cute pony rides. Go back in time with a sleigh ride for a fun afternoon out on the ranch.

Miniature Golf

You’ll find several outdoor miniature golf locations in Wisconsin Dells. This is a fun way for the whole family to get a break from the water parks and play a game together.

We really like Pirates Cove near Downtown Dells. The setting was pretty and built into a hill. They also have 5 different courses with 91 unique holes to play.

If you want an indoor course try the 3D Minature golf at Wild Fun Zone in Downtown Dells or the Wilderness Resort 3D course. Our kids were big fans of all the decorations to see in the 3D courses.

Wisconsin Dells Trolly Tours

The Wisconsin Dells Trolly Tour Company has several different trolly tours to choose from depending on who is in your party. Families will enjoy the family tour which is a shortened city and history tour geared toward children.

At holiday time hop on their Santa Tour and Haunted History Tour. Adults will love their Wine and Beer Tours and Historical Tours. There is pretty much a Trolly Tour that’s perfect for every age.

Downtown Wisconsin Dells Attractions

Downtown Attractions

Wisconsin Dells has a cute downtown where you can stroll along Broadway Road. It starts at the Wisconsin River and is about 5 blocks long. I will admit it is a little touristy but still a fun area to see. You’ll find shops, restaurants, arcades, museums and more.

There are several fun activities in Downtown. Here you can board the Wisconsin Dells Duck Tour, go bowling, ice skate, and play arcades. You’ll also find Ripleys Believe It or Not Museum where you can explore 3 floors of the world’s best Oddities.

Make sure to check out the little Bavarian Village and see the Glockenspiel clock that goes off every half hour telling the story of the Pied Piper. This is free and located on Broadway Rd.

I would consider the downtown area a year-round spot as you pretty much can do all of it during any season. Learn more in my Downtown Guide.

Riverwalk

Off the downtown strip is the Dells Scenic River Walk. This free paved path takes you along the Wisconsin River where you can see the beautiful sandstone bluff without taking a boat ride. You’ll also find benches to rest and take in the view while playing on their game tables.

Wisconsin Dells Indoor Waterparks & Resorts

The most popular thing to do in Wisconsin Dells is going to a Waterpark. We love the idea of staying at a waterpark hotel as it’s just more convenient.

However, if you are looking to stay somewhere else many of these hotels will offer day passes so you can enjoy the fun too. Wondering which one to stay at? Let me share with you some of our favorite waterpark hotels.

Great Wolf Lodge

The Great Wolf Lodge offers a big indoor waterpark that has three sections. You’ll find a wave pool, tons of slides for all ages, sports pool and hot tubs.

What’s unique to Great Wolf Lodge is their MagiQuest game where kids use wands to solve quests and slay a dragon. This was the real highlight of this hotel for us and our kids absolutely loved it.

They also offer a small outdoor waterpark area too. Get our Great Wolf Lodge review and find out hotel costs.

Wilderness Resort

The Wilderness Resort is huge with 4 indoor and 4 outdoor waterparks. They boast the largest indoor wave pool in America with a glass roof that warms you with the sun. You’ll also find tons of slides, sports pools, and smaller kids’ areas to swim.

Besides the pools, they offer a ton of dry activities both indoors and outdoors. Our kids loved the laser tag, 3D mini-golf, go-karts, ropes course, and huge 4 story Timberland Playhouse.

Find out more tips for your visit to Wilderness Resort.

Tip: Look into getting the Fun Pass at the Wilderness to take advantage of all the activities and save a little money.

Kalahari Resort

The Kalahari Resort is the largest indoor waterpark in Wisconsin. They have a 125,000 sq ft indoor waterpark with slides, wave pool, tot areas, surfing, lazy river and more. We also love the huge outdoor water park where the slides are bigger and faster for a thrilling ride.

But what really sets this resort apart from the rest is the Tom Foolery Adventure Park. All-day at the waterpark can be a lot so the option for dry activities is key.

Tom Foolery offers arcades, rides, rope courses, zip lines, bowling, and virtual reality games. You can also buy day passes for Kalahari and enjoy the fun even if you’re not staying at the resort.

Chula Vista Resort

If your looking for a little more relaxed waterpark try the Chula Vista Resort. Set along the river it has beautiful views and paths to walk. The indoor waterpark is not as big as the others but you also aren’t moving from room to room which was nice.

Outdoors you will find a kiddie pool, wave pool, slides, and sports pool. One unique aspect is the Beach area where kids can dig in the sand while you have a drink at their outdoor tiki bar.

As for nonwater activities, you will find a kids’ center to do crafts and games plus an arcade and miniature golf.

Mt. Olympus

Another enormous resort is Mt. Olympus. It has both water and theme parks to enjoy. This is a great place to visit both in the winter and summer months as they have indoor and outdoor theme parks and waterparks.

The outdoor theme park has 5 roller coasters, go Karts, and amusement rides. The outdoor water park has a wave pool with 9 ft waves, a kiddie wave pool, huge slides, a lazy river, and more.

Indoors they have a smaller theme park with bumper cars, climbing walls, and smaller kiddie rides. The indoor waterpark has a mix of small and large slides, a pool area, a lazy river, and hot tubs. The indoor areas may be smaller than the outdoor area but they still have a ton for the kids to do.

If you have older children I think this waterpark and theme park has more for them to do then any other resort. That being said they also have a great mix of activities for younger kids too.

On the downside, because this resort is so big your rooms are not connected to the waterpark and theme parks so you may have to drive over to the facilities. Day passes are available too.

Wisconsin State Parks & Caves

When you need a break from the Waterparks head to the local Wisconsin State Parks to hike, kayak, swim and play at the beach. You will need to purchase a sticker for your car when parking in the State Parks but the fee is pretty low.

A daily vehicle sticker in 2019 was between $13 and $16 with the lower fee going to Wisconsin Residents. (during COVID you needed to order your pass online so check before you go)

Devil’s Lake State Park

Just 20 minutes south of the Dells you’ll find Devil’s Lake State Park. One of the most visited State Parks in Wisconsin. Here you’ll find easy hiking trails around the lake and harder hikes up the large bluffs. The views on the top of the bluffs though are worth the harder hike.

In the summer months head to their 2 beaches to play in the sand and lake. We also really enjoyed their nature center with small frogs, fish, lizards, and exhibits.

Devil’s Lake does have facilities for food, showers, BBQs, and restrooms for visitors. On the North Shore and South Shore of the lake, you will find dining with a beautiful view of the lake. In the summer months, it gets pretty full so make sure to come earlier in the day.

Read my complete Guide to Devil’s Lake State Park WI to find out everything you need to know before you go.

Rocky Arbor State Park

The Rocky Arbor State Park is only 1.5 miles outside of the Dells but you will feel like your a million miles away from all the hustle and bustle. Here you can go on the many hiking trails, have a picnic and play on the playground. All while being surrounded by pine trees and the sandstone bluffs.

The park is open all year but the parking lot is only open during the season. You can get maps and more information here.

Mirror Lake State Park

Mirror Lake State Park is located only 15 minutes from Downtown Wisconsin Dells but it feels like another world. Visitors will enjoy easy to moderate hikes along the pretty lake and big boulders.

Then head to the beach area perfect for kids or rent a pontoon boat or kayaks to take out on the lake. There are also great spots for fishing throughout the park. Get more details in our Mirror Lake State Park Family Guide.

Cave of the Mounds

Are you interested in exploring a cave with the kids? Cave of the Mounds is about an hour’s drive south of Wisconsin Dells. It would make a great visit on your way to the Dells or on your way home. Why come here? To explore the stunning array of crystal formations and rocks found along the lighted paved pathways in the cave. You will be in Awe!

Kids will enjoy two fun hands-on activities after the tour. They can pretend to be a miner and shift though dirt at the Quarry Edge Mining Sluice to find precious stones. Then head to the Quarry Edge Fossil Dig and become a paleontologist finding hidden fossils and gems in the sand. For a fee, you can take home what you find.
