KOA Wisconsin Dells – Camping, RV & Cabins Review

We really enjoyed our family vacation at the KOA in Wisconsin Dells. Our family members stayed in both the RV sites and cabin sites. Which was helpful for our thorough review.

As we explored we found all of the campgrounds and facilities were kept clean and tidy. We also had great interactions with the staff and found them to be very friendly and ready to help with anything we needed.

Camping, RV & Cabin Lodging

There are three different ways to stay at the KOA Wisconsin Dells. Families can bring their RVs, rent a cabin, or bring their own tent to go camping. Here is a break down of each lodging type.

When you arrive check-in at the main office. Then you will follow a staff member who will take you to your site and answer any questions.

Wisconsin Dells Camping

Tent Site

There are two types of camping sites at this KOA Holiday Campground.

The first one has no electricity hookups or water. It offers a grass pad and a picnic table.

The upgraded campsite offers water and electricity. These are also on a grass pad with a picnic table and a fire ring.

Many of the campsites are surrounded by trees for shade. Campers can access a dishwashing station, clean showers, and bathrooms near the KOA office. Parking can also be found by each campsite.

RV Sites

This KOA has several different levels of RV sites. When picking a site you will need to decide if you want a pull-through site or if you are okay backing your RV into your spot.

The deluxe sites include a grill, patio and a nice table with four chairs. They include all your hook ups and a pull through location for you RV.

For the other sites, the big difference is the AMP rate and they just offer picnic tables rather than the nice patio furniture. But if your camping this may be all you need.

Cabins

The Cabins at KOA Wisconsin Dells offer several different levels of sizes and amenities. From a basic structure to full bathrooms.

The Deluxe Cabin we stayed in offered a full bath with tub, small refrigerator, air conditioning, bunk beds, and queen bed. Outside there was a picnic table and fire ring. Ours also had a small TV with cable.

It’s basically one big room but there are doors on the bathroom and bunk bed area. However, we found it got pretty hot in the bunk bed area with the door closed.

Deluxe Cabin with Full Kitchen – If you want to cook you might want this cabin. It also has a full bathroom and sleeps up to six or eight. These would be great for a bigger family.

In the Deluxe cabins, you will have linens included and soap in the bathroom. These Deluxe Cabins are great if you’re not ready to fully camp but want to enjoy a KOA or if you have family or friends staying on the site in tents or RVs.

Camping Cabin

Camping Cabins are more basic with no bathroom facility. These come in different sizes with some having two sets of bunk beds and others with just one set of bunk beds. You will also need to bring your own linens for these sites.

Campgrounds Map

I wouldn’t worry too much about your campsite location as everything is pretty close. If you have kids who want to play on the playground or pool maybe ask for a site closer to those locations, so you can watch from your camp, cabin, or RV site.

Take a look at the KOA campgrounds map to get a better idea of the size and where each type of lodging is located.

KOA Amenities

The Holiday KOA offers more amenities to guests then a regular KOA. They also offer special events like movie nights and family game nights. There is a calendar of events you can check ahead of time to see what’s going on.

Bathroom and Shower Facilities – Located right next to the main office you will find clean bathroom and shower facilities.

Pool – A big plus is the heated outdoor pool and splash area for families. This area is open only in the summer months.

Playground / Basketball / Game Room– Kids will enjoy playing outdoors at the playground, gaga court, sand area, and basketball court. It is not a huge playground but it gives the kids an area to run around. There is also a sand volleyball court for older kids. Or they can play soccer or games in the grass area.

On a rainy day or cold day head indoors to the small arcade in the main building.

KOA Store – At the KOA Store and office you can pick up small items and get the kids ice cream.

Laundry Facilities – Are also available next to the KOA Office.

Dishwashing Stations – This is great for families staying in tents to have a clean area to wash your dishes.

Tips for Your KOA Stay

  • This KOA books up fast in the summer and weekends so book in advance.
  • There is free WIFI throughout the campgrounds. However, it doesn’t always work great. So make sure to download some shows on your device before you arrive.
  • Quiet Hours – Are from 10 pm -8 am
  • You can not bring wood in from another state to use at the camp. Plan on purchasing wood at the KOA to use for the fire pit. You can buy wood a little bit cheaper just down the road from the KOA too.
  • There is a small area in front of the KOA for dogs to be off lease.

Things to Do in Wisconsin Dells in Winter

Most people think of Wisconsin Dells as a Summer getaway but there are tons of fun things to do in the Winter too.

Indoor Amusement Parks

Keep the kids busy indoors with Arcades, go-karts, miniature golf and more. On our visits, we have discovered three spots that we love to go to for indoor amusement.

Kalahari Resort

Kalahari’s Tom Foolery Amusement Park is 100,000 square feet of activities and games for the whole family. I love that they have things to do for all ages. For example, they have a ropes course for little kids and a huge one for older children.

You’ll also find a climbing wall, indoor mini-golf, laser tag, a huge arcade, Ferris Wheel, rides, and more. If you are staying at the hotel you get a discount on the tickets for this area but anyone can come not just hotel guests.

Wilderness Resort

The Wilderness Resort also offers tons of indoor attractions. The highlight for my kids was their really cool laser tag course. They also enjoyed the go-karts, sky ropes course, 3D mini golf, and escape rooms.

If you want a free area let the kids climb all over the four-story Timberland Playhouse. It has slides, tunnels, and bridges to spend hours exploring. Parents can find seats below to have a coffee and just let the kids play.

Knuckleheads Trampoline & Indoor Amusement Park

Knuckleheads is an indoor trampoline park, bowling alley, and arcade rolled into one huge 80,000 square foot building. Looking for more rides? They also have a roller coaster, bumper cars, ropes course, and 4D theater.

Knuckleheads have smaller rides and slides for younger children too. You can pretty much find something for everyone in the family at this cool indoor amusement park. If you plan to stay for a while look into getting one of their wristbands to help save you some money.

MagiQuest at Great Wolf Lodge

MagiQuest is located in a building next to Great Wolf Lodge so no need to stay at this hotel to play. Inside you’ll use your wand to go on quests solving riddles and eventually battling a dragon.

If your kids are Harry Potter fans this will be a huge hit. Kids and adults can spend hours in this indoor facility with mesh climbers, tunnels, and slides running around to conquer each level. We did this on a rainy day and it was a perfect break from the waterpark.

Worried about packing all that baby gear? Guess what you don’t have to with BabyQuip! This amazing baby rental company featured on Shark Tank will deliver everything to you.

Snow Tubing & Skiing in Wisconsin Dells

Christmas Mountain Village

Christmas Mountain Village is a year-round family-friendly resort that offers tons for families to do. What I love are all the winter activities. Skiiers can ski down 16 different runs with a range from black diamond slopes to beginner runs. They also offer cross country skiing through their beautiful grounds.

If the kids aren’t into skiing yet try their snow tubing hill with handle tows to bring the tubes back up to the top of the hill. What parent wouldn’t love that? It’s a great way to spend a day with the kids outside but still, have the amenities of the resort such as restaurants and equipment rentals. You can also stay at this resort to be closer to all the action.

Cascade Mountain

Cascade Mountain is located 20-25 minutes from Wisconsin Dells. It is a larger ski facility offering 47 trails varying in difficulty levels. Cascade also offers ski and snowboarding lessons specifically designed to teach kids ages 4-10. If you’re not ready for skiing try out their 900″ snow tubbing shoots with a lift that will bring you back up the hill. Kids and parents will have a blast!

I Skate at The Keg

Outdoor skating is offered year-round at The Keg restaurant in Downtown Wisconsin Dells. The outdoor rink uses synthetic ice that works even on the warmest days. All around you’ll find seating for the restaurant and heaters in the winter months. Let the kids go skating while you enjoy a drink or food on the patio.

Shopping

Head to the Outlet at the Dells for some indoor shopping. With 75 outlet stores to shop from you are sure to find something fun at a bargain price.

Things to Do in Wisconsin Dells in Summer

Tommy Bartlett Show

If you want to see a cool outdoor show Tommy Bartlett is the place to go. Watch a 90-minute show with jaw-dropping stunts, acrobatics and water skiers on Lake Delton. Stands are set up along the lake to watch the skiers fly by you. This cool show is open Memorial Day through Labor Day weekend. If it’s a rainy or cool day head to the Tommy Bartlet Exploratory Interactive Science Center. Where they house 175 interactive activities about science for your family to explore.

Duck Boats and Tours

Wisconsin Dells is famous for its Sandstone Bluffs and people flock to see them. Get a close-up view on a scenic boat tour down the Wisconsin River. There are several options to choose from in the area.

If you want an adventure try the Dells Duck Boats which travel over land and water. If you want more of a scenic boat ride try the Dells Boat Tours. The guided tour will tell you all about what you are looking at and the history of the area as the boat cruises down the river.

Noah’s Ark WaterPark

Noah’s Ark Waterpark is the largest Waterpark in Wisconsin Dells. This outdoor waterpark is located on 70 acres in the heart of the dells. Visitors will enjoy the 2 lazy rivers, 4 children’s play areas, 2 giant wave pools, and tons of slides.

You can also go to the 4D Dive in Theatre and play a round of mini-golf. If you are not staying at a waterpark hotel this is a great option for a fun waterpark day with the kids.

Wisconsin Deer Park

If you have wildlife fans in your family head over to the Wisconsin Deer Park. Here you’ll be able to explore, feed and interact with over 100 Deer and other wildlife. Kids will love having the deer feed right out of their hands. Take photos and pet the animals in their own habitat.

Lost Canyon Tours

On the Lost Canyon Tour, families take a horse-drawn carriage ride through the Lost Canyon. It’s the longest and deepest canyon in Wisconsin. You’ll ride through a mile long of cliff walled gorges that few get to see. This is a great way to tour with younger kids or older adults. It’s a beautiful ride that will be narrated by your guide.

Big Foot Zipline

If you enjoy zip-lining you’ll love Big Foot Zipline. You’ll zip through the trees on this 2 1/2 hour tour on 7 different lines. It’s a pretty thrilling experience and perfect for more adventurous families.

This same company also runs a Duck Boat tour so you can create a package to save money and try out both adventures.

Tip: They also run the zip lines in the Winter. Just dress the kids warm.

Big Foot Rope Course

If your not quite ready for the ziplining adventure try the Big Foot Rope Course. It’s a huge outdoor ropes course that offers 80 different elements to climb, step, and crawl. Find tons of different bridges, helicopter crawl, pyramid, jungle tracks, bigfoot, giant steps, and more.

This too can be added into a package with the Big Foot Zip Line and Boat tours if you’re looking to do it all on your vacation.

Country Bumpkin Farm

Open from April 26- October 31st Country Bumpkin Farm offers the family a quintessential farm experience. Find freshly picked fruit and vegetables in their local store. Then head over to the Lil Bumpkin Play Village and Petting Farm. At the play village, you’ll find a farmhouse, church, log cabin, and school to explore.

For some adventure try out the zip line and obstacle course. Lastly, visit the petting zoo with sheep, goats, alpaca, ducks and a miniature dwarf horse. This is a great place to go in the Fall for their Halloween activities too!

Big Chief’s Go-Karts

What kid doesn’t love to race. At Big Chief’s Go Karts kids can race their parents on a safe track May through October. You’ll race up and down hills over a river and through curves. It’s exhilarating for the whole family.

Red Ridge Ranch

Just 20 minutes outside of Wisconsin Dells you’ll find Red Ridge Ranch a primer horse ranch. Visitors can take a guided horseback rides through their 250 Acres of rolling hills and forests. There are a variety of horses for both experienced riders and beginners.

Red Ridge also offers horse-drawn wagon rides in the summer and sleigh rides in the winter. For the youngest in your group, they offer cute pony rides. Go back in time with a sleigh ride for a fun afternoon out on the ranch.

Miniature Golf

You’ll find several outdoor miniature golf locations in Wisconsin Dells. This is a fun way for the whole family to get a break from the water parks and play a game together.

We really like Pirates Cove near Downtown Dells. The setting was pretty and built into a hill. They also have 5 different courses with 91 unique holes to play.

If you want an indoor course try the 3D Minature golf at Wild Fun Zone in Downtown Dells or the Wilderness Resort 3D course. Our kids were big fans of all the decorations to see in the 3D courses.

Wisconsin Dells Trolly Tours

The Wisconsin Dells Trolly Tour Company has several different trolly tours to choose from depending on who is in your party. Families will enjoy the family tour which is a shortened city and history tour geared toward children.

At holiday time hop on their Santa Tour and Haunted History Tour. Adults will love their Wine and Beer Tours and Historical Tours. There is pretty much a Trolly Tour that’s perfect for every age.

Downtown Wisconsin Dells Attractions

Downtown Attractions

Wisconsin Dells has a cute downtown where you can stroll along Broadway Road. It starts at the Wisconsin River and is about 5 blocks long. I will admit it is a little touristy but still a fun area to see. You’ll find shops, restaurants, arcades, museums and more.

There are several fun activities in Downtown. Here you can board the Wisconsin Dells Duck Tour, go bowling, ice skate, and play arcades. You’ll also find Ripleys Believe It or Not Museum where you can explore 3 floors of the world’s best Oddities.

Make sure to check out the little Bavarian Village and see the Glockenspiel clock that goes off every half hour telling the story of the Pied Piper. This is free and located on Broadway Rd.

I would consider the downtown area a year-round spot as you pretty much can do all of it during any season. Learn more in my Downtown Guide.

Riverwalk

Off the downtown strip is the Dells Scenic River Walk. This free paved path takes you along the Wisconsin River where you can see the beautiful sandstone bluff without taking a boat ride. You’ll also find benches to rest and take in the view while playing on their game tables.

Wisconsin Dells Indoor Waterparks & Resorts

The most popular thing to do in Wisconsin Dells is going to a Waterpark. We love the idea of staying at a waterpark hotel as it’s just more convenient.

However, if you are looking to stay somewhere else many of these hotels will offer day passes so you can enjoy the fun too. Wondering which one to stay at? Let me share with you some of our favorite waterpark hotels.

Great Wolf Lodge

The Great Wolf Lodge offers a big indoor waterpark that has three sections. You’ll find a wave pool, tons of slides for all ages, sports pool and hot tubs.

What’s unique to Great Wolf Lodge is their MagiQuest game where kids use wands to solve quests and slay a dragon. This was the real highlight of this hotel for us and our kids absolutely loved it.

They also offer a small outdoor waterpark area too. Get our Great Wolf Lodge review and find out hotel costs.

Wilderness Resort

The Wilderness Resort is huge with 4 indoor and 4 outdoor waterparks. They boast the largest indoor wave pool in America with a glass roof that warms you with the sun. You’ll also find tons of slides, sports pools, and smaller kids’ areas to swim.

Besides the pools, they offer a ton of dry activities both indoors and outdoors. Our kids loved the laser tag, 3D mini-golf, go-karts, ropes course, and huge 4 story Timberland Playhouse.

Find out more tips for your visit to Wilderness Resort.

Tip: Look into getting the Fun Pass at the Wilderness to take advantage of all the activities and save a little money.

Kalahari Resort

The Kalahari Resort is the largest indoor waterpark in Wisconsin. They have a 125,000 sq ft indoor waterpark with slides, wave pool, tot areas, surfing, lazy river and more. We also love the huge outdoor water park where the slides are bigger and faster for a thrilling ride.

But what really sets this resort apart from the rest is the Tom Foolery Adventure Park. All-day at the waterpark can be a lot so the option for dry activities is key.

Tom Foolery offers arcades, rides, rope courses, zip lines, bowling, and virtual reality games. You can also buy day passes for Kalahari and enjoy the fun even if you’re not staying at the resort.

Chula Vista Resort

If your looking for a little more relaxed waterpark try the Chula Vista Resort. Set along the river it has beautiful views and paths to walk. The indoor waterpark is not as big as the others but you also aren’t moving from room to room which was nice.

Outdoors you will find a kiddie pool, wave pool, slides, and sports pool. One unique aspect is the Beach area where kids can dig in the sand while you have a drink at their outdoor tiki bar.

As for nonwater activities, you will find a kids’ center to do crafts and games plus an arcade and miniature golf.

Mt. Olympus

Another enormous resort is Mt. Olympus. It has both water and theme parks to enjoy. This is a great place to visit both in the winter and summer months as they have indoor and outdoor theme parks and waterparks.

The outdoor theme park has 5 roller coasters, go Karts, and amusement rides. The outdoor water park has a wave pool with 9 ft waves, a kiddie wave pool, huge slides, a lazy river, and more.

Indoors they have a smaller theme park with bumper cars, climbing walls, and smaller kiddie rides. The indoor waterpark has a mix of small and large slides, a pool area, a lazy river, and hot tubs. The indoor areas may be smaller than the outdoor area but they still have a ton for the kids to do.

If you have older children I think this waterpark and theme park has more for them to do then any other resort. That being said they also have a great mix of activities for younger kids too.

On the downside, because this resort is so big your rooms are not connected to the waterpark and theme parks so you may have to drive over to the facilities. Day passes are available too.

Wisconsin State Parks & Caves

When you need a break from the Waterparks head to the local Wisconsin State Parks to hike, kayak, swim and play at the beach. You will need to purchase a sticker for your car when parking in the State Parks but the fee is pretty low.

A daily vehicle sticker in 2019 was between $13 and $16 with the lower fee going to Wisconsin Residents. (during COVID you needed to order your pass online so check before you go)

Devil’s Lake State Park

Just 20 minutes south of the Dells you’ll find Devil’s Lake State Park. One of the most visited State Parks in Wisconsin. Here you’ll find easy hiking trails around the lake and harder hikes up the large bluffs. The views on the top of the bluffs though are worth the harder hike.

In the summer months head to their 2 beaches to play in the sand and lake. We also really enjoyed their nature center with small frogs, fish, lizards, and exhibits.

Devil’s Lake does have facilities for food, showers, BBQs, and restrooms for visitors. On the North Shore and South Shore of the lake, you will find dining with a beautiful view of the lake. In the summer months, it gets pretty full so make sure to come earlier in the day.

Read my complete Guide to Devil’s Lake State Park WI to find out everything you need to know before you go.

Rocky Arbor State Park

The Rocky Arbor State Park is only 1.5 miles outside of the Dells but you will feel like your a million miles away from all the hustle and bustle. Here you can go on the many hiking trails, have a picnic and play on the playground. All while being surrounded by pine trees and the sandstone bluffs.

The park is open all year but the parking lot is only open during the season. You can get maps and more information here.

Mirror Lake State Park

Mirror Lake State Park is located only 15 minutes from Downtown Wisconsin Dells but it feels like another world. Visitors will enjoy easy to moderate hikes along the pretty lake and big boulders.

Then head to the beach area perfect for kids or rent a pontoon boat or kayaks to take out on the lake. There are also great spots for fishing throughout the park. Get more details in our Mirror Lake State Park Family Guide.

Cave of the Mounds

Are you interested in exploring a cave with the kids? Cave of the Mounds is about an hour’s drive south of Wisconsin Dells. It would make a great visit on your way to the Dells or on your way home. Why come here? To explore the stunning array of crystal formations and rocks found along the lighted paved pathways in the cave. You will be in Awe!

Kids will enjoy two fun hands-on activities after the tour. They can pretend to be a miner and shift though dirt at the Quarry Edge Mining Sluice to find precious stones. Then head to the Quarry Edge Fossil Dig and become a paleontologist finding hidden fossils and gems in the sand. For a fee, you can take home what you find.

Great Wolf Lodge Locations

There are 18 different Great Wolf Lodge Locations in the US. With so many you are bound to find a location in driving distance from your home. Often they are located in more touristy areas which gives you access to more activities and attractions outside the resort too.

We spent our family vacation at the Great Wolf Lodge in Wisconsin Dells but the resorts are similar throughout the country. Find out if there is a location near you.

Saftey Precautions

To ensure the health and safety of guests during Covid-19 Great Wolf has added new safety precautions.

All guests age 5 and older must wear face masks throughout the resort. Guest are also asked to maintain a 6ft distance when waiting in lines at the waterpark and seating will be spaced 6ft apart.

Lastly, there will be enhanced and more frequent cleaning and sanitizing of the entire resort. To learn more before you go visit their Health and Safety Program.

Indoor & Outdoor Water Park

The indoor waterpark at the Wisconsin Dell’s location was comprised of three connecting rooms. We really liked this as opposed to some of the larger waterparks where you spend half your time walking between buildings.

It also made it easier for the kids to have a little independence while we were still able to keep an eye on them.

There were tons of slides for all different age groups. I thought they did a great job of making sure each age group had a slide they’d love.

Even some racing slides and a tornado slide for the big kids. Families can also go on a small lazy river, play in the sports pool, get wet in the water fort play area, and catch a wave in the wave pool.

The outside was a little smaller at the Wisconsin Dells location than some other large waterpark resorts. But we like that there was easy access to go from the inside to the outside waterparks.

You will also find a hot tub just for adults and a family warming pool. The family warming pool was a huge hit and was often pretty full.

The temperature is kept warm in the water park but you can get a chill sometimes when you’re wet so the hot tubs were a great feature.

Great Wolf Lodge Attractions and Activities

MagiQuest

The MagiQuest game is the signature activity at all the Great Wolf Lodge locations. Kids purchase a MagiQuest wand which can be reused every time you come to the resort.

Kids then set off to solve riddles throughout the hotel and use their wand to gain points and badges to slay a dragon.

The Wisconsin Dells location has a separate building for MagiQuest with four floors of adventure with slides, tunnels, and rope bridges to climb.

Give yourself a lot of time for this activity. We only bought one quest but we were able to get hours of fun out of the game. It really helped to have a separate fun building and the fact that you don’t have to do it all at one time.

You can start and finish your quests throughout your stay. I honestly was skeptical about spending the money on this but it ended up being our son’s favorite part of the trip.

Arcade

All the Great Wolf Lodges offer arcade games. It’s a great place to go when you need a break from the water park. We usually do this after dinner or earlier in the morning before the water park opens and we need to get out of the hotel room.

There are several activities throughout the day offered for kids. In the morning try their rise and shine activities such as a family walk around the resort and yoga. At night they have storytime and do a PJ dance party.

The highlight of the resort is their Great Clock Tower show pictured above. Woodland creatures come out and dance, sing, tell stories, and more. It’s pretty cute to watch. I would say these activities are really geared toward younger children. But great free activities for families.

Great Wolf Lodge Tips for Your Visit

  • Towels are provided when you enter the pool area. However, don’t forget to return them when you leave the pool area or you will be charged.
  • Life Vest – These are provided free of charge at the pool area
  • If you are visiting during a busy time go down early in the morning and put a bag on a table or chairs you would like to save. That way you have somewhere to keep your stuff while you swim & have a place to take a break.
  • Extend your stay by taking advantage of the long pool hours you get with your stay. You can check-in early and use the pool even if your room is not yet ready. On your last day check out and then spend the rest of the day at the pool. You can get two full days at the pool for just a one-night hotel fee.
  • Lockers – If you are already checked out of your room and are still swimming put your change of clothes and other valuables in a locker. They are located in the pool area.
  • Changing Rooms/ Bathroom – In the bathrooms areas there are showers and changing areas to use if you stay late.
  • The hallways can be cool so make sure to bring a light sweatshirt or coverup to walk back to your room. You can not take the towels with you.
  • Take advantage of the free storytime and other activities at night when you’re done with the water park for the day.
  • Check out the events calendar before you go to see if they have anything special going on during your visit.
  • Look for cheaper rates on your stay on sites like Booking.com. Or sign up to get emails from Great Wolf Lodge and they will notify you of upcoming sales.
  • If you plan to do several of the paid activities consider getting a Paw Pass. The pass groups together activities to give you a cheaper rate.
  • When getting your room ask if it connects to the waterpark through indoor hallways. This is a really nice perk on rainy or wintery days.

Wisconsin Dells Attractions

Located right outside of the Great Wolf Lodge are tons of entertainment establishments and restaurants for families. What’s cool is a lot of locations are in walking distance from the Great Wolf Lodge.

  • Fast Food Resturants – Five Guys, Panera Bread, Taco Bell, McDonald’s, Subway, Noodles & Company, Starbucks and Rosati’s Pizza.
  • Buffalo Phil’s Grill – A sit-down restaurant where your food can be delivered by miniature trains. How cool is that! They also have a large menu and a lunch buffet.

Downtown Wisconsin Dells

If you want to get out and take a drive head to Downtown Wisconsin Dells only 10 minutes away. Here you will find a cute touristy street filled with restaurants, shops, and arcades.

We loved visiting Wild Fun Zone located on the strip. My kids really loved the glow in the dark indoor miniature golf and awesome laser tag course.

Another area not to miss is the Glockenspiel Clock and Bavarian Village. Every half hour the huge cuku clock goes off and tells the story of the Pied Piper.

It’s free and fun to watch while your eating ice cream or some local fudge. There is also a nice scenic river walk if you’re looking for a quiet stroll.

General Information

The Wilderness Resort has so many fun activities perfect for all ages.

They do a great job of having a mix of older kid areas and younger kid areas located next to each other. This makes it a lot easier for families with kids of different ages to play near each other.

When the kids have had enough of the pools and slides, head to all the great indoor activities like 3D Mini Golf, Laser Tag, Laser Maze, Go-Karts, an Indoor Ropes Course, arcades, and the brand new Take Flight ride.

The combination of indoor attraction and waterparks are what puts this Wisconsin Dells resort over the top to make it such a fun weekend getaway any time of year.

Are you excited about going now? Your family is gonna love it! Follow along below as I give you my top Wilderness Resort tips for families.

Wisconsin Dells Wilderness Resort a fun Family Waterpark hotel with tons of indoor and outdoor attractions for kids.

Safety Updates as of 1/12/21

The Wilderness Resort is following the state-mandated mask requirements. What this means is anyone age 5 or older must wear a mask in lobbies, hallways, arcades, dry attractions, public restrooms, and restaurants.

Visitors do not need to wear a mask while eating in a restaurant or when swimming in the pools. You are also not required to wear a mask at the outdoor attractions but are encouraged to social distance.

All guest rooms are being cleaned with disinfected utilizing hospital-grade cleaning products with special attention paid to high touchpoints. As an extra precaution, BIOPROTECT is being applied to rooms and general areas as an extra level of protection.

Read more about BIOPROTECT and the latest safety updates at Wilderness Resort Covid-19 before you go.

Check into Wilderness Hotel

New Frontier Lobby of the Wilderness Resort in Wisconsin Dells.

The resort has now opened its brand New Frontier Lobby which is where you can check-in. Starting at noon on your arrival day you can begin using all the resort amenities. However, your room may not be ready till 4:00 pm.

If you cannot get into your room right away, start with the dry indoor activities like Laser Tag and Mini Golf first. That way you are not all wet when you have to go back to your car for your luggage and change in the bathrooms into your bathing suits.

There will be plenty of pool time after you get into your room.

Shorter Check-in Lines

Check-in lines can be long, so if you are staying in the condos, cabins or villas bypass the first check-in area you drive up to and follow the parking lot around to the Wild West Lobby entrance.

Most people stop at the New Frontier Lobby at the front of the hotel so the lines there are longer. Either way, you are getting back in your car after check in to park so it really doesn’t matter that it’s further away especially if it saves you time.

Wisconsin Dells Deals

Check Groupon for rate deals or other promotional sites like Travel Zoo. We found a great deal on Groupon that included unlimited Fun Passes for the indoor activities. This made a big difference in the price of our trip.

You will also find better rates if you can go during the week. Weekend prices tend to be higher.

Room Location in The Wilderness Lodge

When booking your room, ask to not be on the second floor if you are in the main lodge.

The second floor is the hallway that connects all of the buildings and everyone takes it to get around the resort so it is loud and crowded all the time. We were on the third floor and it was quiet.

If you want to get out of the large hotel building try the condos or cabin options. It will give you more room to spread out as a family and you can take a shuttle to the resort when you want to go to the waterparks.

Wilderness Resort Dry Activities

There are tons of great indoor and outdoor activities for your family to do out of the water. Indoors families can explore 10 different activities and find 6 great outdoor attractions.

Update – With the health restrictions some indoor attractions may be closed such as the climbing wall. Make sure to check before you purchase a Fun Pass.

Here are a few guest favorite Dry Activities. Find all of them at Wilderness Indoor Attractions.

Take Flight

Feel like your flying with this new aerial adventure ride located by the Frontier Lobby. Take Flight has 60 motion seats spread over 3 tiers. Guests will feel like their soaring like a bird over the American Wilderness taking in the spectacular views. This is a must-do on your next visit.

Northern Lights Sky Lights Ropes Course

Things to do in Wisconsin Dells

Walk on a tight rope and over bridges 30ft above the arcade on this thrilling challenge. Everyone is harnessed in for safety so you can enjoy climbing all over while feeling safe.

Lost Cabin Laser Tag

The Wilderness has updated their laser tag arena and it’s really cool. The new area has 3 levels and over 3,000 square feet of fun. It’s huge! Plus they’ve updated their laser guns to the newest technology.

This area is sure to be a family favorite!

Wilderwoods Indoor Go-Karts

Wilderness Resort Go-Karts

Need an adrenalin rush? Race the indoor Go-Karts around the 525 ft. long course. There is a height restriction to drive the karts. But kids 4 and older can ride with their parents so they don’t miss out on the fun.

Wild Abyss Indoor Mini Golf

Wild Abyss Min Golf at Wilderness Resort

Recently updated this indoor mini-golf is a black-light course with cool features to look at as you play a round of golf.

Wild West Bumper Boats

Fun Things to Do at Wilderness Resort in Wisconsin Dells. Bumper Boats are a fun indoor activity for families.

Compete against family on indoor water bumper boats. Bump your boat into fellow riders and spray water as they pass by you. Although this ride is not technically dry it is included in the fun pass so I added it in.

Timberland Playhouse

Timberland Playhouse at Wilderness Resort in Wisconsin Dells

**This area is currently closed due to health restrictions.

Timberland Playhouse is a huge indoor climber located in the Wild West Region and it’s FREE!

The playhouse has four stories of fun from slides to swings, tunnels, and bridges. They have designated this area for kids 12 and under. There is also a separate gated area for kids four and under.

My kids (age 6-9) loved climbing around this huge space and spent tons of time here. If your looking to save some money and are mostly at the Wilderness for the pools you’ll love this free activity.

Tips for Timberland Playland

  • One issue is it is hard for parents to fit in if they are chasing younger ones around the older area. So, most kids run around by themselves and the parents watch from the seats below.
  • The other issue is it is right by the arcade so if you don’t want to pay for arcade games, make sure to warn the kids ahead of time.
  • You can order food to be delivered to this area.

Outdoor Dry Activities

There are a few outdoor dry activities your family can enjoy in the summer months too.

Wilderness Canyon Zipline

Fly through the treetops over the lost canyon 60 ft. above the ground on a zipline. Guest will travel between 6 towers on this thrilling ride.

Lost World Jurassic Mini Golf

A fun 18 hole mini golf course with a dinosaur theme the kids will enjoy.

Go-Karts & Kiddy Karts

Race around an outdoor track on Go-Karts. This is a larger track than the indoor Go-Karts. Here you’ll also find Kiddy Karts the younger kids can ride too.

Nature Paths

Get out into nature by wandering the outdoor nature paths or along the water at Wilderland Park. In the summer months, you can even ride a horse-drawn wagon through the Wisconsin woods on the property.

Fun Passes

When checking in, they will ask you if you want to purchase the Fun Pass for the indoor activities. These are not included in your stay, only the pool access is included.

Wilderness offers two different levels of the fun pass. The regular Fun Pass includes one-time admission to several of their rides & activities. The Ultimate Fun Pass gives you unlimited admission.

The Unlimited Pass costs $45.00 a day and the Fun Pass is $29.95 at the time of writing this article. Our kids did laser tag three times in a row all three days plus all the other activities so it was worth it for us to upgrade.

TIP: There are height restrictions on many of the activities so keep that in mind before you buy the pass. If you have younger kids who are too short, this might not be worth the money.

Towels for the Pool

Towels are provided at the pool area. When you check-in they will give you a towel card for each person. Every pool area has a towel desk to get towels and replace them when they are wet.

Tip: The towels are small so we replaced them after every use so we had dry towels after we got out of the pool. You could also bring your own towel if you prefer but then you have wet towels in your room at night.

Temperature Inside the Hotel

When using the indoor pools bring a light sweatshirt or robe to wear when you leave the pool and head back to your room. The hallways tend to be cool especially in the winter.

Family Dining

The Wilderness Resort has 15 different places to eat. There is a mix of types of restaurants from ice cream parlors, lunch spots and sit down restaurants. Whichever area of the resort you are in you should be able to find somewhere to eat.

Camp Social is the newest dining area in the Wilderness. It’s an updated food court area with a Burger Bar, Pizza, Hot Dogs, Candy Bar, Coffee Canteen, and Breakfast Bar. This is a great choice when you want to grab something quick.

Klondike Pizza will deliver pizza to you poolside or to your room.

If your looking for a sit-down experience there is a sports bar, Steakhouse, and an Italian restaurant.

Find out more about each restaurant at Wilderness Resort

Tips for Saving Money on Food

You will find food and drinks can get expensive. To help bring down the cost of food take advantage of the mini-fridges and microwaves in your room.

  • Consider bringing breakfast food to have in the room.
  • Bring snacks for the pool -They do have signs saying no food at the pool area but no one seems to check and everyone had tons of outside food at their tables.
  • Save on dinner by ordering a pizza. There is a Domino’s across the street or order through the Resorts Klondike Pizza Kitchen and have it delivered to your room.
  • Bring drinks for your room water, juice maybe even wine for adults.
  • Bring refillable water bottles so you don’t spend money buying water at the pool.

Refillable water station

In the Wild WaterDome Water Park, there are refillable water bottle stations so bring your water bottles from home with you.

Adults only Swim up Bar

When you need a break from the kiddos, the indoor wave pool area has an adults-only swim-up pool bar and hot tub. There is a security guard there to make sure no kids get into this pool area.

If you have kids that are good on their own in the wave pool, head over there for a break.

Mark your Territory

Go down early in the morning to save seats as it gets pretty crowded and hard to find seats anywhere to put your stuff down later in the day.

The other alternative is to rent a cabaña for the day. If you plan to stay in one area of the waterpark this will give you some extra space and a spot for your kids to find you.

Keeping Your Phone Dry

The MoKo case I use at Water Parks

Most likely you will be leaving your stuff at your table while you go in the pools. I was worried about leaving my phone plus I wanted to take pictures of the kids in the pool so I brought a waterproof phone case.

It held my room key, credit card and phone. That way when we are away from the table for a while I didn’t have to worry.

Above find a picture of the Moto Case I used and really liked. You can hang it around your neck or use the Velcro arm band.

Check out

On check out day, you can stay and use the resort the whole day.

We took advantage of this by starting the day doing the indoor activities while we were dry. Then we went back to our room to change into our suits, checked out, and spent the rest of the day at the pool.

I will say the changing rooms are not great at the waterpark. They are located in the bathrooms and are just an open space at the end.

It is fine for kids but maybe awkward for adults. However, don’t let this keep you from staying after checkout.

Lockers

They do have lockers you can use on the day you arrive or the day you check out to store some of your items. You may want to throw your purse or other valuable items in one to keep safe while you swim.

Wilderness Indoor & Outdoor Waterpark

Wild West Water Park play structure.
Wild West Water Park play structure.

There are 4 indoor and 4 outdoor pool areas to explore at Wilderness Resort. Each has a different attraction from slides, wave pools, lazy rivers, bumper boats, and little kids’ areas.

For the indoor waterparks you do have to walk between buildings to get to them all. However each one is connected by indoor hallways.

I would suggest you choose a different time of day for each pool area rather than running back and forth.

What to Pack for the Waterpark

Here are a few things I would suggest bringing with you to the park.

Goggles – Your kids will want googles for the pool. We love the speedo goggles as they are very durable with my rough boys.

Water Toys – Kids can use small water toys in the wave pool or swimming pool. Mine had a great time with these Toypedoes while waiting for the wave pool to start.

Dive rings are easy to pack and will give the kids another reason to jump into the water.

Beach Bag – You’ll want a beach bag to carry all your stuff down to the pool. Find one with lot of pockets to hold all your kids googles, toys, books, towels and everything else you need at the pool.
